Feminist Mothering (a book!)

Thanks to Blue Milk for alerting me to this great new book that has just been released. This is a topic of great interest to me, as I'm sure you've all seen in my posts on feminism and this book pulls together the experiences of different women in a series of essays on feminist mothering. Here is a quick description of the book:

Feminist Mothering goes beyond critiques of patriarchal motherhood to locate and investigate feminist maternal practices as sites for women’s empowerment and social change. The contributors see “feminist mothering” as practices of mothering that seek to challenge and change the norms of patriarchal motherhood that are limiting and oppressive to women. For many women, practicing feminist mothering offers a way to disrupt the transmission of sexist and patriarchal values from generation to generation. Contributors explore the ways in which women integrate activism, paid employment, nonsexist childrearing practices, and non-child-centered interests in their lives—and other caregivers into their childrens’ lives—in order to challenge existing societal inequality and create new egalitarian possibilities for women, men, and families.

Oh, and maybe a Pause button too so that I have time to read it (right now I'm reading a book on another topic that is dear to my heart and that follows a similar essay format - Parenting Beyond Belief - I highly recommend it and hope to write more about it later).

By the way, speaking of books, you might want to check out The Science of Parenting--I recently got it and it's amazing in documenting what happens in a child's brain and the importance of responsive care and NOT letting a child cry it out (and the harm that occurs if you do CIO). It's by Margot Sunderland and the paperback version just came out on Amazon. It's actually incredibly visually appealing and a quick read, too.
